Managing the Information Flow on a Poker Table
The fact that some Poker players are able to win more than the average player does not stem from getting more high end cards than the others (because they do not) but rather through the way they are able to control the game. One of the best ways of running a table is of course controlling the way information moves around.
When it comes to information control, there are three aspects to this particular Poker strategy: gathering information, withholding them and releasing information or misinformation to confuse your opponents, or make them play in a certain way. To be able to succeed, you need to learn all three of them.
Gathering information, of course, consists mainly of reading the other players on the table. Through reading and spotting tells, you will be able to make certain judgments and thus make adjustments to your Poker strategies as needed. You should try to identify the strongest and weakest player, so that you will be able to focus most of your reading on them. The strong one you will try to avoid until you have the big hands, and the weak one to exploit.
Withholding information, of course, concerns yourself. Inasmuch as you want to try and learn from your opponents, it is important that you try not to give away anything with regards to your own hand and status. The importance of this cannot be stressed enough; all your actions, if they are read, will be rendered useless.
Misinformation is a Poker strategy that becomes apparent when you make bluffs, semi bluffs or, in a way, slow play a nut hand. Releasing information that you want your opponents to know, on the other hand, can be useful for those times when you want them to play in a particular manner.
For instance, assume your image is tight aggressive and are holding KQ on the button. Some players before you make a raise and you fold your hand. You should show them what you hold. Even if you lost out of a pot, the other players on the Poker table will get the message; you play quality hands.
If you want the table to perceive you as loose, you would do the same and show them that you are playing marginal hands. If the playing style is tight, you display the opposite tendency, and then you make the appropriate shift once the players adjust.
The information that you can obtain in a Poker game is numerous, and with the right skill set, you can use that to your advantage. All it takes is practice, and an understanding of the way that players perceive the table. Once you get the basics, you will be able to dictate the flow of the hand and win.
